This is a series of short studies and longer articles I wrote all based in the book of Genesis, that I did in winter of 2025/26 with a small group. I’ve read Genesis carefully like this several times over the years, but this is the first time I’ve truly felt that I understood it in a deeper and more complete way. I am certain I will go deeper still in the future. Genesis was very challenging for some of those younger in the faith so I felt I should post this to aid anyone who needs a little help. This is not a line by line commentary but rather a series of points that hit me each day. I include some science and history and pictures as I am inclined to do.
Short Survey of Genesis – Part 1 – Chapters 1-10

Chapter 1
I contrasted Gen 2:19 with chapter 1 where God named several of his creations, night, day (1:5), sky (v8), land and seas (v10). So God was doing the naming but he designed man to take over the process. In the same way Jesus said,
John 14:12
I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.
So just as God the Father delegated naming to man, the Son of God delegated the evangelisation of all nations to US!
Given who Jesus was and what He still is, this places huge trust in the people of God. This makes me more excited in my evangelism and has encouraged me and those out sharing with me as I am aware I am delegated this work by the ruler of the cosmos. I have a lot of first hand experience of how evangelism is designed to bless the one bringing the message with a renewed world view. It massively expands the consciousness of the active participant and is therefore a crucial part of the growth curve of young christians.
Philemon 1:6
I pray that you may be active in sharing your faith, so that you will have a full understanding of every good thing we have in Christ.

Chapter 2
I looked into Gen 2:5-6 today.
The word ‘streams’ translates more accurately to ‘mist’.
The Hebrew word אֵד (ʾēd) can mean mist, vapor, or subterranean moisture.
As a biologist with two science degrees I find if fascinating that creationists have been able to use this verse and others in Gen 6 and 7 to build a model of the pre flood hydrological cycle and one of the foremost thinkers on this was Walt Brown whose hypothesis was the Hydroplate theory.
God’s Word gives us just enough to refute evolution.

Chapter 3
I did not have to go much further than Genesis chapter 3 verse 1 to get blown away this morning. The Serpent, who is the Devil, the ancient Serpent (Rev 12:9, 20:2) was the most crafty of all the creatures that God made. I consider myself to be fairly crafty and there is a side to craftiness that is wisdom and yet to think that one can outsmart Satan as a human being with a limited IQ or even knowledge of the Scriptures alone is a great vanity. This verse highlights the need to have desperate prayer every day and also explains why Jesus tells us to pray that we will not be allowed to suffer temptation. We actually need protecting from this craftiest of creatures on a daily basis because we will fall into the worst sins otherwise. I often use Jude verse 22 and 23 to show just how complex our thoughts can be and just how sophisticated our posture can be. Yet even with all this capacity for sophistication in our mindset going into any or every situation we cannot prepare ourselves for the craftiness of Satan the ancient serpent. We need prayer. I need prayer.

Genesis 3:6
When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also *desirable for gaining wisdom,* she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.
Double dipping. Often false teaching are presented as ‘wise’. So crafty is the serpent that he uses even the pursuit of wisdom and craftiness as the trap, using our envy and jealousy of his very craftiness against us! Thus Solomon could be exceedingly wise but a fool at the same time. This highlights the danger of being wise in our own eyes.
This is why Jesus used children as a model for how we should train ourselves in innocence. Drop unnecessary opinions so we don’t fall into the trap of Eve and then Adam. Desire simplicity and humility as a balance to wisdom.
Matthew 10:16
I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.
So we do our best to imitate the wisdom of Christ rather than the wisdom of Satan.
James 3:17
But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.
Mark 9:35-37
Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all.” He took a little child and had him stand among them. Taking him in his arms, he said to them, “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.”
Mark 10:43-44
Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all.
I need the wisdom of the child, the servant and the slave. Then I will be first in the kingdom of God.

Chapter 4
I found verse chapter 4 v1 very interesting in what Eve says. Prior to this she was given an equal and opposite helper role. I think having a son was the first time she now had an elevated role over a man (albeit a baby but who quickly became a man) and she is recorded as having made this statement that ‘with the help of God she had brought fourth (or acquired) a man’. Women thereafter would perhaps never have the same insight as although the authority welded by mothers over sons can be lasting and even inappropriate at times, it is more expected by the mother subsequent to Eve, as it is all around us from birth, but not so at the beginning hence Eve’s emphasis. It is a deep insight into the power shift that a mother experiences, psychologically and emotionally as well as within the social dynamic of families.
Having spent some time at Christmas with my mum and my wife’s mum too, this has given me a lot of food for thought. Deep waters.

Chapter 5
DNA is truly amazing.
Genesis 5:3-5
When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image; and he named him Seth. After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Adam lived 930 years, and then he died.
Scientific evidence from mammals, including primates, demonstrates that DNA is fully capable of sustaining viable populations originating from very small founding numbers, even when early generations experience inbreeding. Through mechanisms such as genetic purging, selection, and rapid population expansion, biological systems repeatedly overcome severe genetic constraints.
Empirical biology shows that DNA is robust, capable of sustaining life through extreme founder events, close kin reproduction (modern humans carry evidence of past bottlenecks), and rapid population expansion. While theology and genetics address different questions, nothing in modern population genetics renders a small founding population biologically impossible. The limiting factors are environmental, not genetic inevitability.
Genesis 1:28
God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it…
Genesis 9:7
As for you, be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on the earth and increase upon it.”
If Adam lived 930 and had a child every year (equal numbers of male and female children on average) with Eve (or subsequent wives upon the death of each) every year and those children matured at age 18 and also had yearly children and so forth for each generation, what would the total number of his descendents have been at the year of the flood?
The population would vastly exceed the Earth’s capacity within only a few centuries before Adam even reached middle age. Factoring in disease, war environmental factors there is no telling how the population exploded.
Even today we are all therefore paired at marriage to a relative in the human population!
The law of Moses later prevented inbreeding amongst the Hebrews. The increase of carcinogens and radioactive substances since antiquity through the industrial revolution and atomic age has had serious environmentally damaging effects on human DNA. Additionally at the time of Noah God somehow altered the aging process (Gen 6:3) which is again linked to DNA.
Therefore all the scientific evidence is there to support Adam and Eve being the initial human population with special environment and high quality DNA. But this would not be possible to do today as both the environment and God have altered our DNA.
Again I see that there is enough information in the Bible and corresponding observable science today to prove the biblical account is possible. It is certainly NOT scientifically impossible.
In spite of the rise of science the Bible remains strong, believable, relevant, challenging and alive.

Chapter 6

Bob Enyart’s 2hr 40 minute exposition of Walt Brown’s Hydroplate is the best scientific explanation to prove the Flood as well as the authenticity of the bible.
Every time I read Genesis 6-9 I go back to the Hydroplate theory.
This is a 10 minute version with some narration by Walt himself.

Our study group leader had the insight that Noah was a man of great faith and one can easily imagine the crowds scoffing at his useless big boat and the shock and awe of the cataclysmic eruptions from the deep!
We are building an Ark in London UK and perhaps further afield. And I have had to adopt the posture that i simply don’t care what people think about that. It must be built because God has a plan to pour out His grace on all nations!

Chapter 7
Gen 7 simply amazed at how many animals Noah and the families were locked in with. He must have become an expert zoo keeper and had favourites (and not so favourites).
I can just imagine the guessing games the family played and different sons and daughter in laws having their best impressions.

Never since Adam (or again since Noah) would humans have had such an amazing opportunity to see all the kinds up close, as after they were named by Adam and released by Noah they would have went into habitats.
5000 is a minimum number of kinds assuming:
Broad “kind” groupings (one canine etc),
Exclusion of insects,
Heavy use of juveniles.
7000 with these constraints would have filled half the space.
There was full provision in the Ark and if we prepare there will be full provision in the church.
Deut 25:4, Mt 24:45

Mice reach sexual maturity and can reproduce at about six weeks. This could lead to 1,000,000 individuals in 10 months.
Chapter 8
Gen 8 yesterday I looked into how the animals were fed on the ark and what they could have eaten in the first few months on release. So encouraged. That in between the release and the rodent explosions the only real problem was the species (kinds) that need to eat only meat for survival and solutions abound such as stealing fish carcasses from those birds and bears etc that were fishing and left overs from the dried meat stock Noah had to have for them (Gen 6:21).
The fact that the rodents could multiply so rapidly with no competition in 3 months and supplement the much smaller numbers of apex predators is amazing! I will never look at rats the same way ever again!
The bible has everything to satisfy the rational enquiring mind!

Chapter 9
Gen 9.
God makes a big deal of the rainbow that would not have been physically possible in the pre-flood world. The rainbow gets 5 whole verses.
The rainbow is a sign for believers. It has nothing to do with lgbtq+.
It is our sign. The sign of God’s promise, a reminder of the flood. A reminder of the rain water and therefore a reminder of our baptism (1 Pet 3:21)!

Gen 10 (and 9)
The claim that Ham’s sin led to Black slavery rests on a chain of interpretive errors: misidentifying the cursed party (Canaan, not Ham; Gen 9:25), and then falsely equating Africans with Canaanites (Gen 10:6–20), importing racial categories foreign to Scripture (Gen 9), and ignoring explicit biblical condemnations to hell of slave-traders (Exod 21:16; 1 Tim 1:10) and additionally the false concept and application of generational guilt (Ezek 18:20). This was simply post-biblical ideological misuse of Genesis 9 by whites (calling themselves Christians) to justify economic exploitation rather than a faithful interpretation of the text. These slaving whites (and the Muslims who started the industrial slave trade and black African tribes complicit in facilitation of the trade – historically since at least 2+ millenia BC) were ignorant of God’s will that all races came from one man and woman (Acts 17:26) and we’re created and therefore always have been equal (Gal 3:28).
Colossians 3:11
Here there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, *slave or free* , but Christ is all, and is in all.
